LIONS TAKE DOWN SANTA MARGARITA IN CIF-SS PLAYOFFS
The JSerra Boys Basketball team went to the homecourt of one of its’ biggest rivals and produced one of their signature performances of the season, as the Lions overwhelmed the Santa Margarita Eagles 63-51 in a Pool A game of the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs at Santa Margarita Catholic High School in Rancho Santa Margarita.
JSerra, which dropped its opening game of Pool A play to Notre Dame High School of Sherman Oaks, avenged its’ two regular season defeats to the Eagles and improved to 22-8 overall.
Senior B.J. Davis was the offensive catalyst for the Lions in the first half, as he found open spaces in the Eagles defense and connected on 6-of-9 shots from the field, including 5-of-6 from behind the three-point line.
Davis-Ray’s 17 first-half points sparked JSerra to a 33-23 lead at halftime.
The Lions used a 10-4 burst late in the third quarter to help push their advantage to 51-39 heading into the final quarter.
Junior Brannon Martinson, who scored 13 points in the second half on 6-of-7 shooting, sealed the game with a big three-point play with 1:36 remaining.
Davis-Ray finished with a double-double, scoring 21 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
He also helped spearhead a strong defensive effort on talented Eagles junior Kaden Bailey, who tallied 25 and 24 points respectively in the team’s first two matchups, but was held to single digits on Friday.
Martinsen added 19 points, while sophomore Earl Bryson tallied 10 points.
