LIONS CAP UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH TITLE TRIFECTA
The JSerra Boys Soccer team carved a dominant path that led straight toward completing an undefeated season with the highly coveted “Title Trifecta.”
After winning the Trinity League and CIF-SS Open Division titles, the Lions earned the top seed in the CIF Southern California Division 1 Regional Championships and began their final title run with a 4-0 triumph over the Del Norte Nighthawks in a first round match on Tuesday at JSerra Catholic High School.
JSerra broke into the lead in the 33rd minute, as freshman Finn Wilkins sprinted down the right side of the field and sent a well-timed crossing pass into middle of the field for senior Jake Tatch, who blasted a shot into goal.
The Lions offense found consistent rhythm early in the second half to put the match away.
Senior Brody Martinez pushed the Lions’ lead to 2-0 in the 45th minute, as he received a pass from senior Gavin Allegaert in front of the goal and chipped a shot into the back of the net.
Tatch added his second goal of the match one minute later, booting a shot into the far post corner of the goal to increase the Lions’ advantage to 3-0.
Allegaert capped the match scoring in the 57th minute, heading a shot off a pass from Tatch into the back of net.
JSerra clashed with Saint Augustine High of San Diego in the Regional semifinals on Thursday, and Tatch produced a performance for the ages to spark the Lions to a 4-0 triumph over the Saints at rain soaked JSerra Catholic High School.
Tatch put the Lions ahead 1-0 in the 21st minute, when he received a pass down the middle of the field from Allegaert that skipped past the Saints defense and set him up with a one-on-one attacking run against the Saints goalie.
Tatch subsequently booted a shot past the goalie and into the back of the net.
The Lions increased the advantage in the 48th minute when Wilkins sent a cross over to Tatch in the middle of the box, who knocked a shot into the goal.
Tatch recorded a hat trick in the 57th minute.
Senior Angel Reyes connected with Tatch on a beautiful diagonal pass through the Saints defense, which Tatch received in open space and finished by booting the ball into back of the net.
Tatch capped his spectacular night seven minutes later, tracking down a redirected corner and striking a shot into the goal for his fourth goal.
All that stood between the Lions and the completion of their season-long title trifecta quest was a rematch against the Loyola Cubs (whom JSerra defeated in the CIF-SS Open Division title match the week prior) in Saturday’s Division 1 Regional Championship match at JSerra Catholic High School.
JSerra emphatically seized the crown and put the finishing touches on a dominant campaign by overwhelming the Cubs in a 4-0 victory.
The Lions took a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute, as Allegaert shielded a Cubs defender in the box and connected a pass to Tatch streaking into open space in the box.
Tatch subsequently uncorked a left-footed shot that bounded into the opposite post corner of the goal.
JSerra increased the advantage in the 27th minute.
Senior Tanner Casey connected a long pass down the field to Allegaert, who tapped a pass to sophomore Aquiles Rodriguez making a run toward the goal.
Rodriguez maneuvered past a Loyola defender into a one-on-one chance with the Cubs goalie and knocked a shot into the back of the net.
Allegaert joined in on the goal-scoring festivities in the 46th minute, as he received a pass from Reyes in the box and left-footed a shot into the near post corner of the goal.
Allegaert capped his three-assist performance by finding Reyes in the middle of the box for a left-footed shot that rolled into the goal for the final score of the match in the 54th minute.
JSerra has now achieved the “Title Trifecta” in two of the last three seasons, and closes the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 20-0-1, outscoring its opposition by a cumulative score of 72-10.
