LIONS START FAST AT SOCAL’S FINEST TOURNAMENT


The JSerra Softball team opened its’ season with an impressive showing at the SoCal’s Finest Tournament at Big League Dreams in Chino Hills.

The Lions produced shutouts of Ganesha and Murrieta Mesa by identical 2-0 scores to kickoff the tournament.

Junior Zena Edwards put the Lions ahead for good against Ganesha, as she smashed a home run to center field in her first at bat of the season.

Edwards also scored the second run of the contest on a Giants’ error.

Sophomore Brooklyn Lamb went 2-for-3.

Junior Lilliana Escobar tossed six shutout innings, allowing only two hits while striking out eight.

The Lions tallied the lone two runs of their match-up against the Rams in the second game in the bottom of the first inning, as sophomore Angie Jimenez and Lamb each collected RBI singles.

Lamb went 2-for-3 for the second straight game.

Sophomore Abby Ford tossed five shutout innings, allowing three hits while striking out eight.

JSerra doubled up Santiago High of Corona in their third game by a score of 4-2.

The Sharks grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, but Lamb blasted her first home run of the season in the bottom of the inning, a booming shot well over the wall in left center field.

Santiago re-captured the lead in the third inning, but senior Brooke Stephens  smashed a ground rule RBI double to left field that tied the contest.

Edwards put the Lions ahead to stay in the bottom of the fourth inning, as she smashed a line drive over the fence in left field for her second home run of the season.

Edwards, who went 2-for-3 in the game, drove in an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning with an RBI single to center.

Escobar, who entered the game in the second inning, was dominant in the circle in relief, allowing two hits while striking out 15 in six innings.

After losing to Norco 1-0, the Lions closed out the tournament with a 5-0 win over Roosevelt.

The two teams were locked in a scoreless contest through the first three innings, but the Lions broke the game open in the fourth inning.

Senior Lauren Gaitley slapped a two-out RBI single to center field to score junior Emily Zora to put the Lions ahead 1-0.

Freshman Madeline Capek then supplied the big swing of the game, connecting on a three-run home run (the first of her high school career) to center field to give JSerra a 4-0 lead.

Gaitley, who went 3-for-3 in the game, produced her second RBI single in the fifth for the final run of the game.

Escobar continued her dominant start to the season, allowing only one hit in six innings, while striking out 12 to shut down the Mustangs.

JSerra is now 4-1 on the season and will open its home schedule on Friday with a game against Dana Hills.
