LIONS ENJOY STRONG START IN THE SAND


The JSerra Girls Beach Volleyball team has once again displayed the characteristics of a team with its eyes firmly planted on winning a CIF-SS title.

The Lions began their campaign with a 5-0 nonleague triumph over the Edison Chargers at Newland Beach Courts in Huntington Beach.

The tandems of senior Ruby Hill and junior Sara Moynihan (21-7, 21-9), senior Grace Fogel and junior Emma Champagne (21-11, 21-11), senior Nicole Thorp and junior Presley Johnson (21-16, 21-15), sophomore Katherine Nowak and junior Skylar Noble (21-16, 21-11), and freshman Kara Boas and freshman Ava Champagne (21-8, 21-11) produced a clean sweep for the Lions.

JSerra made it back-to-back victories to open the season, as the Lions shutout the Capistrano Valley Christian Eagles 5-0 in a nonleague competition at Fairmont Prep Academy in San Juan Capistrano.

The county’s reigning Players of the Year (Moynihan and Emma Champagne), teamed together for the first time this season and picked up wins of 21-9 and 21-7.

Fogel and Johnson (21-7, 21-8), Noble and Nowak (21-8, 21-5), junior Catherine Beadles and freshman Ava Champagne (21-18, 21-11), and sophomore Sarah Thorp and junior Charlotte Nowak (21-17, 21-16) finished off the Lions’ second straight team sweep.

The Lions defeated the Tesoro Titans, 5-0, in a nonleague match at Tesoro High School in Las Flores.

Hill and Moynihan picked up victories of 21-12 and 21-7, Fogel and Thorp won their sets by scores of 21-4 and 21-17, sophomore Katherine Nowak and Johnson were triumphant by scores of 21-9 and 21-17, Boas and Noble produced set wins of 21-15 and 21-10, with Ava Champagne and Sarah Thorp claiming wins of 21-4 and 21-10 in the team sweep for the Lions.

The Lions produced a split its’ two nonleague matches at Manhattan Beach Pier in Manhattan Beach.

JSerra defeated the Huntington Beach Oilers by a score of 4-1.

Junior Emma Champagne and Fogel (21-17, 21-19) Thorp and Johnson (21-12, 21-15), Nowak and Noble (21-5, 21-5), and Boas and Ava Champagne (21-2, 21-12) helped earn the win for the Lions.

Moynihan and Champagne accounted for the Lions’ lone set triumph in a 1-4 defeat to the Mira Costa Mustangs, as the duo claimed victory by scores of 21-15 and 21-12.

The Lions rebounded from the defeat to post a 4-1 victory over Laguna Beach.

Hill and Presley Johnson posted double wins of 21-13, Fogel and Nicole Thorp were victorious by scores of 21-6 and 21-15, Beadles and freshman Ava Champagne notched triumphs of 21-14 and 21-11, while Noble and sophomore Kaitlyn Dostert recorded two wins of 21-15 to lead the Lions to the match triumph.

JSerra is now 5-1 on the season.
