PETRONI, NAKFOOR SPARK LIONS PAST ORANGE LUTHERAN
The JSerra Girls Soccer team kicked off Trinity League League play on Tuesday with a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over the Orange Lutheran Lancers at Orange Lutheran High School.
JSerra has now won six of their last seven matches and improves to 10-4-1 on the season.
The Lions broke through on the scoreboard in the second minute, as sophomore G.G. Szczuka drew a Lancers foul in the box.
Senior Sydney Schuler converted the ensuing penalty kick to make it 1-0.
Orange Lutheran battled back and produced the match-equalizer in the 15th minute.
Senior goalie Daphne Nakfoor produced five saves in the half to help keep the match deadlocked at the intermission.
Both teams had attacking runs early in the second half, but it was the Lions who produced the decisive play of the match in the 65th minute.
Schuler floated a corner kick into the box, where amongst heavy traffic, freshman Isabella Petroni located the ball and blasted a shot into the near post corner of the goal to re-establish a one-goal advantage for the Lions.
Nakfoor, who finished with nine saves in the match, helped preserve the win by slapping away a Lancers corner kick opportunity with under 30 seconds left in the match.
