LIONS OVERWHELM MATER DEI IN HIGH-STAKES CLASH
A match-up of the top ranked teams in Orange County turned into a signature performance by the JSerra Boys Soccer team, as the Lions blanked the Mater Dei Monarchs 4-0 in a highly anticipated Trinity League clash at JSerra Catholic High School.
The two teams entered the match undefeated with a combined 14 wins, but it was the Lions who continued their undefeated season-long run, improving to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in league play.
The two teams traded early scoring chances, but Lions senior goalie Liam Johnston tallied five saves in the half to stymie the Monarchs’ attack.
Senior Miles Burton put the Lions ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute, as he located a free kick off the foot of senior Angel Reyes and timed a header perfectly that sailed into the goal.
The Lions capitalized on another set piece just before halftime in the 40th minute to increase the lead, as senior Tanner Casey found the back of the net on a header off a corner kick from senior Jake Tatch.
Casey was in the middle of the action in second half, heading a perfectly placed crosser to the far post corner for senior Brody Martinez, who slid into the ball and knocked it into the back of the net.
Tatch capped the Lions’ triumphant outing with a goal assisted by sophomore Hudson Garner.
