MUSTANGS EDGE LIONS IN SUDDEN DEATH OT: The @jserra_boys_water_polo team saw its’ run in the CIF-SS Open Division playoffs come to a tough ending on Saturday, as the Lions were defeated by the visiting Mira Costa Mustangs 14-13 in sudden death overtime in an Open Division Crossover Game at JSerra Catholic High School.
The Lions finish with a record of 20-12.
Mira Costa jumped out to a 3-1 lead just past the midway point of the first period, but goals from junior Luke Lee, sophomore Andrew Schneider, and senior Connor Colman propelled the Lions to a 4-3 lead at the end of the quarter.
Colman’s second goal pushed the Lions advantage to 5-3 early in the second period, but the Mustangs fought back with three straight goals to take a 6-5 lead.
Sophomore Lars Knepper tied the contest at 6-6 with 44 seconds left in the half, but the Mustangs answered with a goal on their ensuing possession to take a 7-6 lead at the intermission.
Mira Costa led 8-6 early in the third period, but Knepper and junior Joe Wraith found the back of the net 28 seconds apart to tie the game at 8-8.
The Mustangs answered with two goals in a 50-second span later in the period to recapture the lead, but Wraith’s third goal brought the Lions to within 10-9 heading into the fourth period.
Sophomore Dylan Park provided a huge spark with two goals in 51-second span just past the midway point of the period, the second giving the Lions an 11-10 lead.
Mira Costa took an 12-11 lead with 1:48 remaining in regulation, but Park completed his quarter hat trick by powering a shot into the goal with 10 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Sophomore Ronan Keane put the Lions ahead 13-12 in the first overtime period, but the Mustangs answered with a goal with 1:08 remaining in the second overtime period to send the game into the “Golden Goal” overtime, where Mira Costa supplied the game-winner.
Senior goalie Jonas Ransford put forth a stellar performance for the Lions between the pipes, producing 10 saves, including three on five-meter scoring chances.
