LIONS STORM INTO CIF-SS FINALS: The @jserra.tfxc Boys and Girls Cross Country teams each successfully navigated their paths through the competition and Mother Nature to earn berths into the CIF-SS Finals at Saturday’s CIF-SS Divisional Preliminaries at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut.
The qualifying meet was shifted to the alternate rain course earlier in the week by the CIF-SS due to the threat of inclement weather, and true to the forecast, runners were greeted with a steady, driving rainstorm throughout the competition.
In the boys Division 4 qualifying, the Lions (currently ranked No. 2 in the division) advanced with a cohesive group effort.
Junior Zac O’Leary (16:09.1), senior Cole Carlson (16:09.3), senior Luke Friedl (16:09.4), senior Alden Morales (16:09.8), and senior Jack Burnett (16:10) crossed the finish line in near unison and each scored in the top 20 to lead the Lions (80 points) to a third-place heat finish.
On the girls’ side of Division 4 qualifying, the nation’s top-ranked team easily earned its way into the finals by scoring five runners in the top six in their heat.
Junior Hayden Kroger was the pacesetter for the Lions, as she finished second overall in the race with a time of 17:29.6.
Kroger was followed by freshman Brooklyn Tennant (17:34.3), senior Mireya Hardman (17:54), freshman Sierra Harden (18:05.9), and senior Molly Hux (18:12.7) who were third, fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
Junior Sophie Tonks (18:35.3) and sophomore Talia Whitten (18:51) were also amongst the top 12 overall finishers in the race.
JSerra produced a heat-best 20 points.
